The second part of the assessment for this module will be written commentary and evaluation of two research articles that will be provided by the course tutor. (2000 words)
Reading the following two articles and discuss the research methods used in each one:
VanPatten, B (1990)’ Attending to form and content in the input: an experiment in consciousness’. Studies in Second Language Acquisition 12:287-301
Peirce,B.N. (1985)’Social  indentity, investment and language learning’. TESOL Quarterly. 29/1:9-28
In your discuss, you should describe and compare the methodology and research design used in each article, and critically analyse them by considering how effective and appropriate they are in addressing the aims of the research. You will be given a copy of both articles.
2.Testing
Choosing either Question1 or Question2
1) ‘Good tests should be a valid and reliable reflection of what we are trying to enable our learners to do with the language’. What you understand by this statement? Do you agree with it? What are the implications for the construction of achievement and proficiency tests and test items? Illustrate your answer with examples of test items.

2. In you evaluation, you should discuss the balance of the test as a whole, as well as individual items.
3. Any appendices  e.g. the test itself and suggestion  for new items, are not included in the word-count.

2) What  do you consider to be the main principles of communicative language testing and assessment?  Taking either an international proficiency test of English or one used in your own teaching context ( this could include continuous assessment), consider the extent to which the assessment satisfies or fails to satisfy these principles. Illustrate you points with examples of test/assessment items.
